The Catholic Community Foundation Awards More than $180,000 to Area Organizations, Programs
Grants Top $2 Million Plateau in Last Five Years

March 11, 2008 - MILWAUKEE - The Catholic Community Foundation recently awarded grants from its donor funds totaling $180,880.

The Catholic Community Foundation, which began operation on July 1, 2001, funds organizations and causes that support the mission of the Catholic Church in Southeastern Wisconsin. The Foundation has awarded more than $2 million to 233 programs since 2002, the first year grants were distributed.

"These grants will have a meaningful impact across Southeastern Wisconsin. The organizations that received funds are helping countless children and adults and making a real difference in the lives of many." said P. Michael Mahoney, Chairman of the Board.

"Surpassing $2 million in grants is a significant milestone for The Catholic Community Foundation. In just over six years, we have had the opportunity to help numerous organizations help people and make significant changes for the good of our community." remarked Mary Ellen Markowski, President.

The Catholic Community Foundation, which began operation on July 1, 2001, funds organizations and causes consistent with the mission of the Catholic Church of Southeastern Wisconsin.

The organizations that received grants are:

America's Second Harvest of Wisconsin - $2,500
This grant will help fund the Backpack Buddies Program, providing free school supplies to at-risk children attending Catholic schools throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.

Archdiocese of Milwaukee - $1,930
This grant was awarded to the Catholic Stewardship Appeal.

Archdiocese of Milwaukee - $2,000
A grant for priests, recognizing their outstanding work in the area of liturgy, preaching, justice and peace ministry.

Archdiocese of Milwaukee, John Paul II Center - $10,000
This grant will assist in supporting the Theology on Tap and the Why Do Catholics Do That? Programs, both addressing issues of interest for persons ages 18-35.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Milwaukee - $7,500
This grant will help support the Children of Promise Program which mentors children of incarcerated parents.

Casa Guadalupe Education Center, Inc., West Bend - $7,500
This grant will help support the Family Service and Pastoral Ministry Program "Develop Bilingual Catholic Latino Leaders" in Washington and Fond du Lac Counties by providing opportunities for 300 Latino individuals to gain job, life and leadership skills through educational programs and services at the center.

Casa Romero Renewal Center - $5,000
This grant will help fund the Family Enrichment and Spiritual Development Programs which offer healing, support and empowerment to the Latino community.

The Cathedral Center, Inc. Women's Shelter - $1,000
This grant was awarded for general support of the Women's Shelter.

Catholic Urban Academies - $3,080
This grant will help provide tuition assistance for students at St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic Urban Academies who could not otherwise afford private, Catholic education.

Catholic Memorial High School - $2,000
This grant is an addition to the Brian D. Hanley Endowment Fund.

Centro Legal - $5,000
This grant will help provide affordable legal representation to low income clients in family law and misdemeanor defense cases.

Congregation of the Great Spirit - Siggenauk Center - $1,000
This grant was awarded to help support the Siggenauk Center food pantry.

Creative SHARP Presentations - $7,500
This grant will help fund the Eight Building Blocks of SHARP Literacy Program in Blessed Sacrament, St. Anthony of Milwaukee and St. Rose Catholic Urban Academy Schools.

Daystar, Inc. - $10,000
This grant award will help fund operating expenses to provide housing and support services to childless, domestic violence victims with zero-to-low income.

Dismas Ministry - $5,000
This grant will help assist, in collaboration with the St. Clare Center at Cardinal Stritch University, the training and certification of Catholic lay persons who will enter the field of Catholic prison ministry.

Dominican High School - $2,500
This grant will help provide tuition assistance for Latino students with demonstrated financial need.

The Gathering of Southeast Wisconsin, Inc. - $8,000
This grant will help fund general operating expenses associated with feeding Milwaukee's hungry and homeless.

Gesu Parish - $2,880
This grant will be used to support their meal program.

The Guest House - $10,000
This grant will help fund the expenses for the 7C's Community Counseling Center, offering programs for homeless men for treatment of addictions and mental health problems.

House of Peace - $5,000
This grant award will be used to provide holiday gift baskets to Milwaukee's less fortunate, allowing the poor to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas with enough food for a holiday dinner and leftovers for several days.

Manresa Project - $7,500
This grant will help support the Manresa Scholar Project, a program originated at Marquette University, which provides an immersion into church ministry for students who are discerning whether church ministry is their vocational goal, either lay or ordained.

Marquette University - $2,000
This grant is an addition to the Brian D. Hanley Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity - $1,000
This grant will help fund expenses associated with furthering their work.

My Good Mourning Place - $3,000
The award will assist in funding operating expenses for the bereavement center which provides counseling and peer support for children and teens who have experienced the death of a loved one.

Notre Dame Middle School - $5,000
This grant will help fund the Graduate Support Program, an eight year commitment to help place students in college preparatory high schools and continue to provide support during their college years.

Office for World Mission - $4,750
This grant will help provide scholarship support for Maryknoll Priesthood candidates.

Pregnancy Help Center of Milwaukee, Inc. - $5,000
This grant is intended to help fund operating expenses for this organization which addresses the needs of young pregnant girls with counseling and assists them with material needs.

St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care - $5,000
This grant will help fund the Pastoral Ministry Program and the Instrument of Peace Ministry Program, both of which provide services to children, physically and cognitively disabled adults, frail elderly, and their caregivers.

St. Ben's Community Meal - $10,000
This grant will help serve daily nutritious meals to the poor and homeless.

Saint Francis Seminary - $8,590
Grants were awarded to provide scholarship support to men studying for the priesthood, allowing them to take advantage of the human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral components of the priestly formation program.

St. Hyacinth Parish - $2,500
This grant was awarded to help support their food pantry.

St. Martin de Porres Parish - $5,000
The funds from this grant will help support the Brother Booker Ashe Lay Ministry Program, preparing African American Catholics for meaningful and effective ministry and to foster leadership within the African American Catholic community.

St. Mary's Springs High School - $2,150
This grant will help support the At-Risk Initiative, a program to serve students who are struggling to succeed in school.

St. Vincent de Paul Society of Fond du Lac- $5,000
This grant will help provide the neediest of the needy with rent and utility expenses and training of five Hispanic individuals to increase cultural sensitivity.

School Sisters of Notre Dame - $10,000
This grant will help with operating expenses associated with the Theresa II Retirement Facility for retired Notre Dame School Sisters, religious women who have spent their lifetime in dedication to the field of education.

Waukesha Catholic School System - $5,000
This grant will help provide tuition assistance for Hispanic children in the Waukesha area whose parents are interested in having their children receive a Catholic education.
