May 24, 2007 - MILWAUKEE - The Catholic Community Foundation has awarded 23 grants totaling more than $195,000 to Milwaukee organizations that provide health care services to the medically indigent and to organizations that support the priorities of the Foundation. "We are always pleased to be able to assist those organizations/programs which make our community and the Church of Southeastern Wisconsin stronger and more vibrant." said P. Michael Mahoney, Chairman of the Board.
The Catholic Community Foundation, which began operation on July 1, 2001, funds organizations and causes consistent with the mission of the Catholic Church of Southeastern Wisconsin.
Adult Day Services and Resource Center - Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee - $10,000
The grant will help fund a registered nurse on staff at the center. This service provides blood pressure screenings to "walk-in" clients (primarily the elderly), patient monitoring in order to prevent hospitalization, and pre-mature nursing home placement.
Adult Learning Center - $10,000
The grant will assist in funding the work of a registered nurse that provides primary health care, health based counseling, prevention/wellness education and a connection to health care service available in the community.
Agape Community Center - $5,000
This grant will help fund the expansion of their community health outreach efforts through the Healthy Families Project. Focusing on prevention and education, the Healthy Families Project includes teen pregnancy prevention, violence prevention, and nutrition and exercise education.
AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin - $10,000
The grant will support medical care and treatment of indigent persons living with HIV/AIDS in Milwaukee.
Angel of Hope Clinic - $10,000
This grant will assist in supporting the expenses of this clinic, located at the Hope House shelter, which provides basic health care services to poor and homeless people on Milwaukee's near south side.
Benedict Center - $5,000
This grant will help fund the "Sisters Project", providing street outreach to women involved in drugs and prostitution.
CORE/El Centro - $10,000
This grant will help support the programs offered, including Thriving with Cancer Program, Children's Wellness Program, Trauma & Recovery Program, Special Needs, and Outreach Education. These programs include the services of acupuncture, reiki, massage, Tai Chi, Yoga and holistic exercise.
House of Peace - $10,000
This grant will help support the House of Peace Community Nursing Center, in collaboration with the UWM College of Nursing, working to assist individuals in attaining an improved quality of life and to provide medically necessary services and medicine to clients who lack insurance, information, or money.
Madre Angela Dental Clinic - $10,000
This grant will assist in supporting the Urgent Care Program that provides emergency dental care services. This clinic is an oral hygiene clinic dedicated to serving those who are homeless or uninsured.
Milwaukee Christian Center - $6,500
This grant will be used to increase access to health services for Southeast Asian seniors and facilitate more proactive and healthy behaviors.
Near South Side Catholic Schools Association - $10,000
This grant will help fund a school nurse for three schools on the near south side - St. Adalbert, Prince of Peace/Principe de Paz, and St. Rafael. The nurse works directly with the medical needs of students, assists parents in their search of medical providers, educates parents about the medical needs of their children, and trains teachers/staff to properly handle medical situations.
Parish Nurse Program - $10,000
The grant will assist this community outreach initiative that serves six religious congregations throughout Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties (four Catholic) which include St. Adalbert, St. Hyacinth, St. Mary Magdalen, and St. Martin de Porres. Congregations also served are Beth Jehuda and Benediction Lutheran.
Penfield's Children Center - $10,000
This grant will help support the Special Care Nursery, in providing nursing services, physical, occupational and speech therapies, special education, and childcare for mentally fragile and at-risk children from birth to age three.
Philippine Cultural and Civic Center Foundation - $5,000
The grant will help support operation of their free clinic, operating two Saturday mornings a month.
Rosalie Manor Family and Community Services - $11,000
This grant will assist a home visiting nurse in providing basic health and medical services for the Family Program. Rosalie Manor Family and Community Services is committed to working for the prevention of child abuse, child neglect and teen pregnancy.
St. Ben's Clinic at the Cathedral Center - $11,500
This grant will help fund the nurse practitioner who provides medical services at the center to homeless women and children.
Saturday Clinic for the Uninsured - Medical College of Wisconsin - $10,000
This grant will assist in supporting the operations of the clinic which provides free, high quality, primary care to uninsured clients for a variety of common conditions.
S.E.T. Ministry, Inc. - $10,000
This grant will support two nurse case managers who will assist in providing for the health care needs of 40 at-risk families through the Family Health Promotion Project. S.E.T. Ministry, Inc. has been successful in implementing programs that serve the low income, underserved and overlooked people in Milwaukee.
In addition, The Catholic Community Foundation also awarded this grant cycle the following non-health care related grants:
Archdiocese of Milwaukee - $16,600
This grant was awarded to provide assistance for the needs of retired priests.
The following four grants were awarded to provide scholarship support to students from Racine area schools:
Marquette University - $4,000
This grant will assist students from Racine Horlick High School and Walden III Middle/High School.
Alverno College - $2,000
This grant will assist students from Washington Park High School and JI Case High School.
St. Catherine High School, Racine - $3,000
This grant will assist students attending a Catholic college or university in Milwaukee.
Sacred Heart Parish Grade School, Racine - $6,000
This grant will assist students attending the grade school and those planning on attending St. Catherine High School.
