The Catholic Community Foundation Announces Grant Recipients

November 5, 2002 – Milwaukee, WI. The Catholic Community Foundation Board of Directors recently approved grants to five southeastern Wisconsin organizations. The grants total $60,000.

The Catholic Community Foundation, which began operation on July 1, 2001, funds organizations and causes in line with the mission of the Catholic Church of southeastern Wisconsin. These are the first grants awarded by the Foundation.

"Each of these organizations operate programs that are examples of the Catholic Church of southeastern Wisconsin in action," said Stephen Graff, chairperson of Catholic Community Foundation Board of Directors. "Awarding grants to these organizations will ensure that the good work being done will continue to benefit people."

The following organizations have received grants:

The Cathedral Center, Inc., Milwaukee - $20,000
This grant will be awarded for programs for homeless women and children. The Cathedral Center is an assessment and service center that is a collaborative partnership of the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist parish and five social service agencies. The parish and agencies share a common vision and mission to develop a new model of assessment and service for homeless women and children.

CommonGround Ministry, Inc., Wauwatosa - $10,000
The grant will assist in funding ministry programs that provide physical, spiritual and emotional support to people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. The grant will assist with the work done at Elena's House that provides for those experiencing this disease.

Dominican High School, Whitefish Bay - $20,000
This grant will help to augment and provide services to students with learning disabilities. The grant will assist those with learning disabilities the opportunity for access to and success in a quality Catholic educational community. The school's Learning Resource Center provides academic support for students who have documented academic deficiencies and have learning disabilities.

Franciscan Peacemakers, Inc., Milwaukee - $2,500
This grant will support the Summer Vacation Bible School program for neighborhood children. Franciscan Peacemakers is an organization that provides a wide variety of direct services to poverty-stricken populations in Milwaukee's central city.

St. Philip Neri School, Milwaukee - $7,500
This grant helps support the After School Program for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The program helps create an environment and the time for students to learn the habits and study skills necessary to achieve a higher level of academic success.
